Google Business Profile for Home Service Businesses: A Plain-English Setup Guide

When a homeowner searches “plumber near me” or “roof repair” plus their town, the first thing they often see is not a website. It is a map with a handful of local businesses listed under it. Those listings come from Google Business Profile.

If you run a home service business, your Google Business Profile is one of the most valuable free marketing tools you have. Here is how to set it up properly, in plain English.

What Google Business Profile is (and is not)

Google Business Profile, which used to be called Google My Business, is the free listing that shows your business name, phone number, reviews, photos, hours and service area in Google Search and Google Maps.

It is not a website, and it does not replace one. Think of it as your sign on the side of the road. Your website is the showroom people visit once the sign gets their attention.

Step 1: Claim or create your profile

  1. Go to google.com/business and sign in with a Google account you control. Use a business account, not a personal one tied to someone who might leave.
  2. Search for your business name. If a listing already exists, request access to it. If not, create a new one.
  3. Enter your business name exactly as it appears on your truck, invoices and signage.

Do not add keywords or towns to your business name. “Smith Plumbing” is correct. “Smith Plumbing Best Emergency Plumber Dover NJ” breaks Google’s guidelines and can get your profile suspended.

Step 2: Choose the right primary category

Your primary category is one of the most important settings on your profile. Pick the one that best describes your main service, such as “Roofing contractor,” “Plumber,” “HVAC contractor” or “Electrician.”

You can add secondary categories for other services you offer, but only add ones that genuinely apply.

Step 3: Set yourself up as a service-area business

Most trades go to the customer rather than the customer coming to them. If that is you, tell Google you do not serve customers at your address.

  • Hide your street address, especially if you work from home
  • Add the cities, towns or zip codes you actually serve
  • Keep the area realistic, based on where you will actually drive

If you have a showroom or office that customers visit during set hours, you can show your address as well.

Step 4: Verify your business

Google needs to confirm you are a real business before your profile goes fully live. The options vary by business and can include a video recording, a phone call or text, an email or a postcard.

Video verification is common for service businesses. Google may ask you to show your location, your signage or branded vehicle, your tools or equipment, and something that proves you manage the business. Have those ready before you start.

Step 5: Fill in every section

A complete profile gives Google more to work with and gives homeowners more reasons to call. Fill out:

  • Phone number: a number that is actually answered during business hours
  • Website: a link to your homepage or your most relevant service page
  • Hours: including whether you offer emergency or after-hours service
  • Services: each service you offer, with short descriptions
  • Business description: a plain explanation of what you do, where and why customers choose you
  • Opening date: shows you are established

Keep your business name, phone number and address (if shown) consistent with your website and other listings.

Step 6: Add real photos

Upload photos of your work, your team, your vehicles and your logo. Real photos from real jobs do far more than stock images. Add new photos regularly, not just once at setup.

Good photo ideas:

  • Before and after shots of completed jobs
  • Your crew on site (with their permission)
  • Branded trucks and equipment
  • A friendly photo of the owner or team

Step 7: Build a steady flow of reviews

Reviews are a big part of how homeowners choose between businesses on the map. The best approach is simple and consistent.

  • Ask every happy customer right after the job, while they are still happy
  • Send a direct review link by text so it takes them seconds
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and professionally
  • Never buy reviews or offer rewards for them, which breaks Google’s rules

A steady trickle of new reviews looks better and lasts longer than a big burst followed by silence.

Step 8: Keep it active

Your profile is not a set-it-and-forget-it task. Every month or so:

  • Add a few new job photos
  • Post an update, offer or seasonal reminder
  • Check that your hours and services are still accurate
  • Respond to any new reviews

How your profile and website work together

Your Google Business Profile gets you noticed. Your website closes the deal. Many homeowners will tap through to your site to check your work, your services and whether you look legitimate before they call.

That is why the website link on your profile matters so much. If it sends people to a slow, outdated or confusing page, you can lose the call you just earned. At Web Grow Experts, we build websites designed to pick up where your profile leaves off, with clear services, real proof and an easy way to call. FAQ

Yes. Creating and managing a profile costs nothing. Google sells advertising separately, but you do not need it to have a profile.

Can I set up a profile if I work from home?

Yes. Set yourself up as a service-area business and hide your home address. Customers will see your service area instead.

How long does it take to show up on Google Maps?

It depends on verification and on your area. Once verified, your profile can appear fairly quickly, but ranking well for competitive searches takes time, reviews and consistent activity.
